As a crypto geek and laptop reviewer, I am often asked, “What is the best laptop to mine crypto coins?” The best laptops have discrete GPUs for crypto mining with at least 4GB of VRAM, thick chassis to allow warm internals, and high-quality cooling solutions.
Mining produces a lot of heat, leading to thermal throttling, decreased hash rates (the amount of computational power used to mine), and damage to components. That is something that no one wants!
The typical laptop is small, which can hinder heat dissipation. While slim, lightweight laptops are popular among gamers, they are not recommended for crypto mining. The Asus ROG Zephyrus MU502 is one example.
It reached a scorching 150 degrees Fahrenheit during our gaming heat test. Whew! It could be dangerous to mine on it or any other laptops that are more prone to overheating. You’ll need a large laptop with good thermal performance.
Crypto Mining Risks
If you are serious about mining crypto on a laptop, a large laptop with good cooling is the best option. However, there are still risks to laptop mining.
- Hardware wear and tear will increase. Your laptop’s lifespan can be affected by mining.
- Electricity. Powerful GPU-equipped laptops don’t usually have the longest battery life. This means that you will need to keep your device plugged in throughout the day. This can impact your electricity bill. It could affect your profitability unless you are willing to donate your resources to a cryptocurrency blockchain, even if it’s at a loss, to verify transactions and preserve its integrity.
- Environmental impact. BTC and other cryptocurrencies are known for their ecological impact. According to TRG Datacenter’s data, Bitcoin consumes 707 kWh per transaction. Dogecoin is, however, more friendly to the environment, using 0.12 kWh per transaction. Despite this, mining is not exactly eco-friendly.
- GPU shortage and Nvidia’s crackdown. You should be aware that there is a shortage in graphics cards because of the popularity of crypto mining. Nvidia is upset that crypto nerds are buying all the GPUs. This makes it difficult for gamers’ primary consumer base to secure their products. So, the gaming giant put crypto limiters on some graphics cards. RTX 3060 Ti and 3070, respectively. This dramatically reduces their mining performance.
- Some cryptos are more rewarding than others. I would not recommend mining Bitcoin on your laptop. To earn BTC rewards as a miner, it is necessary to compete with other miners in solving complex cryptographic equations. The Bitcoin network favors miners who have the best hardware. The difficulty of solving these puzzles in Bitcoin has increased dramatically, making it less attractive to mine Bitcoins on laptops. It’s possible, but it will cost you peanuts. Consider mining, XRP, and Shiba Inu.
How to test the best crypto mining laptops
We looked at the heat when compiling this list of the best crypto mining laptops. There are two types of heat we can use: gaming and non-gaming. We decided to examine our gaming heat temperatures to determine which laptops perform well under pressure.
Our gaming heat test consisted of five loops using Metro: Exodus on our laptops’ native resolution. We used the Extreme preset to set the computer up. An infrared thermometer measures the touchpad, G/H keys (center), and the laptop’s underside on the sixth run. To determine the hottest spot on the laptop, it is thoroughly swept.
The Laptop Mag Battery Test is used to test a laptop’s durability. It surfs the internet at 150 nits brightness until it runs out of power. We also analyze the laptop’s dimensions to determine if it is large enough to withstand hours’ worth of mining.
How to Select the Best Crypto Mining Laptop
It takes a lot of knowledge to choose the best cryptocurrency mining laptop. Before investing in a laptop, you need to understand cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Then, it would help if you researched what your computer needs to go on your budget-friendly cryptocurrency mining adventure.
Every aspect of the laptop, including its battery life, processor speed, and graphics card power, will be crucial in deciding which one is the best. These are just a few essential components your crypto mining laptop must have.
Long Battery Live
Mining cryptocurrency requires hours and hours of investment. A long-lasting battery will reduce electricity consumption while maintaining high processing speeds. This increases the laptop’s durability and portability. High-quality laptops are great for programming and other heavy software tasks.
Powerful CPU & GPU
You will need a recent Intel Core processor for crypto mining between the 9th and 12th generations. Modern laptops can be fitted with AMD Ryzen processors, which can handle both the latest operating system and crypto software. A processor that can be easily overclocked is also essential.
The graphics processing unit (or GPU) is probably the essential piece when choosing a laptop. You will be able to mine efficiently and quickly if you choose a laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 3070, or 3080. Due to crypto mining’s high GPU requirements, there has been a shortage of GPU across the industry.
Lots of RAM and SSD Storage Capacity
For cryptocurrency mining, laptops need to have a lot of storage and RAM. A laptop with an SSD storage capacity greater than 512GB is a good choice for mining, but you also have the option to buy 256GB SSD storage for beginners. Avoid those with and only an HDD. You will need 16GB RAM or more. 8GB is acceptable.
How to Get Cheap Laptops for Crypto Mining
- Purchase Laptops from the Manufacturer’s Website. It doesn’t matter if it’s HP, Apple, or Dell; buying laptops directly through the manufacturer’s website is often less expensive than buying from big-box retailers such as Amazon and BestBuy.
- Invest in a powerful gaming laptop. It is necessary to invest in electricity, hardware, and software for crypto mining. A laptop that is just average in price can cost more over time due to the wear and tear crypto mining will cause.
- Wait for Discount Periods. Buy your laptop during heavy electronics discount seasons like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and New Year.

2020 Acer Nitro 5 is the best laptop for crypto mining. The 2020 Acer Nitro 5 is the best gaming laptop for crypto mining. It managed to keep below 105° Fahrenheit in our gaming heat test. The Nitro 5 performed well on our non-gaming heat testing, where it played full HD video for 15 mins.
It remained below our comfort threshold of 95 degrees. The Nitro 5’s hottest temperature was 88 degrees. This heat test unit was equipped with a hexacore Intel Core i7-9750H processor, 16GB RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX2060 GPU with a 6GB VRAM.
Acer placed the dual fans in the top-left corner of Nitro 5 (the motherboard), contrary to the norm. Some reviewers suggested that this could negatively impact cooling.
But there is a way out of Acer’s madness. My theory is that Acer measured which part of the laptop produced the most heat. Their analysis revealed that the region to the upper left is the hottest.
Acer set the fans at that exact location, making it unique. The Acer Nitro 5 was a beneficiary of this arrangement. It is the only gaming laptop that didn’t exceed 105 degrees in our gaming heat test.
The Nitro 5’s all-plastic body is another advantage. Although it may look and feel cheap, it will not scorch as quickly as its metal counterparts.

How do you choose the best cryptocurrency mining laptop?
It’s easier to choose the best crypto mining laptop than shop for a gaming console. There is no need to worry about fancy features like per-key RGB lighting, high refresh rates, and ray tracer. You should choose a system that minimizes the risk of your internals becoming cooked.
Due to their small dimensions, laptops are not recommended for cryptocurrency mining. However, some companies offer cooling solutions that maintain the temperature of the chassis under pressure.
You should not only choose a laptop with great thermals but also consider buying a system that has a large chassis. A laptop that measures 0.6 inches in thickness for gamers and creative professionals is a good choice.
But for crypto miners who are more concerned about appearance, a thinner laptop may not be the best option. A larger chassis is better than a thinner one. Look for laptops with a minimum of 0.9 inches in thickness.
You can earn more cryptocurrency each day if your GPU is more powerful than you are. Higher-performing GPUs have faster hash rates. Battery life is also essential. You should also consider battery life. You will need to charge your battery every hour if it lasts less than one hour.
